Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is safe for almost everyone, but there are certain groups of people who should not try PEMF. It’s not that the electromagnetic fields or the PEMF device is dangerous, however.
People who should not use PEMF therapy
A medical contraindication refers to a situation in which a drug, treatment, or a procedure should not be used because it could be harmful. For example, some pharmaceutical drugs are contraindicated in pregnancy because taking the drug could result in birth defects.
There are two types of contraindication: relative contraindication and absolute contraindication. A relative contraindication means that there is risk, but the drug, treatment, or procedure can still be used if the benefit outweighs the potential risk. However, absolute contraindication means that there’s risk for fatal complications, and the treatment, drug, or procedure must be avoided.
Although PEMF therapy is generally safe, there is one absolute contraindication. Patients with electrical implants should not use pulsed electromagnetic field therapy devices. This includes devices such as pacemakers and insulin pumps. The danger is that the electromagnetic pulses used in PEMF therapy could interfere with the device and cause failure.
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is relatively contraindicated in patients who have undergone organ transplants. After an organ transplant, it’s possible for the recipient’s immune system to identify the donor organ as foreign. The recipient’s body actually rejects the organ. One of the benefits of PEMF therapy is improved immune response, so PEMF therapy is contraindicated in organ transplant patients.
PEMF therapy is not recommended for those who are pregnant. This is due to a lack of research rather than evidence of harm.
Is PEMF therapy right for you?
If you do not have electrical implants, you are not an organ transplant patient, and you are not pregnant, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can improve your overall health and quality of life.
PEMF therapy offers health benefits for animals, athletes, and the average person. If you are unsure if PEMF is right for you, talk to your doctor. Contact PEMF Complete online, or call 877-473-6377, to learn more about PEMF devices for home use and for professional use.
